David Ogilvy was proud of his Scottish roots. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth, The Marketing Society is hosting a series of events at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Ogilvy was proud of his Scottish roots and education. He claimed it was this heritage that developed his passion for marketing effectiveness, as well as the craft of creative execution. He was also a great social animal, story teller and serial networker – wearing his kilt to cocktail parties ensured (like his advertising) that he stood out from the crowd.

On 23 June 2011, as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, The Marketing Society is planning three events that reflect Ogilvy’s passions.

Inspired Thinking: Marketing and the Movies Masterclass with Peter Fisk

(13:00 – 15:00, Filmhouse, Edinburgh)

• Lights: how global and local markets have been transformed by economic crisis and technological change, and the new breed of game-changing brands.

• Cameras: what it takes to build a great brand, to engage people more deeply, and drive profitable innovation in this world of new rules and opportunities.

• Action: why Pixar can be a great inspiration for your business, applying their 15 steps to great movie-making to the challenges of building a successful brand.

Classic Cinema Advertising Showcase

(15:30 – 17:30, Filmhouse, Edinburgh)

Guest clients and agency creatives, including Gerry O’Donnell from The Famous Grouse, Gerry Farrell from The Leith Agency and The Union's Ian McAteer have been invited to present their all-time favourite cinema adverts. The audience will then be invited to vote for the all-time favourite.

There will also be the opportunity to nominate someone who has made an outstanding contribution to marketing in Scotland for the Ogilvy Award which will be presented at the end of the year.

Mad Men Cocktail Party – sponsored by Maxxium

(6.00pm - 8.00pm, The Point Hotel, Edinburgh)

Ogilvy's golden era of advertising has recently been brought to life in the hit TV series – Mad Men. The Mad Men Cocktail Party will provide an opportunity for invited agency and client guests to work the room – Don Draper style.

The event hosts and hostesses will ensure all guests meet a variety of new contacts over a range of cocktails specially created for the occasion. By invitation only
