3DTV viewing predicted to remain low

3DTV viewing predicted to remain low3DTV viewing predicted to remain low

A new report published by Informa Telecoms & Media has predicted that 3DTV uptake will remain flat in the UK – despite the huge sums being poured into the format by BskyB.

3DTV had been predicted to be the next big thing in television following the successful rollout of HDTV sets but those hoping for a similar boom in 3D are likely to be disappointed by the latest findings.

The research firm concluded that 3D is likely to “struggle” to take off and will never become part of mainstream viewing, even though 125,000 3D ready sets have now been sold in the UK.

Such a high adoption rate is unlikely to be reflected in actual 3D viewing however with only 42% of a predicted 11m 3D ready sets expected to be actually used for 3D viewing, according to the analysis.

BskyB has been leading the field in 3D production, successfully screening a number of major sporting events in the format.

The low light shots are poor. A fad unlikely to take off anytime soon. Sky can afford to keep wasting money on it and eventually 'turn off' HD. Good luck because like 98% of the UK population I've not got it and don;t intend getting it.

After the wonder & impact of 3D Avatar I then saw a slew of films not actually enhanced by 3D and silly glasses. I now go for the 2D option when available.

As for 3D TV, good luck to the owners of the 125,000 3D TV sets, as sadly early adopters get pissed all over by the technology they have adopted.
