Is there anywhere the long arm of Facebook doesn't reach? Now it's that widescreen TV in your living room. American viewers will be able to watch and enjoy the same programmes your friends are watching and enjoying at the same time.

They can then decide what shows to watch based on what’s popular with their online friends.

“It’s called ‘friend trends,” Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said as he demonstrated the system. “It allows you to see what you’re friends are liking while watching Hulu … or TV. It’s the beginning of a social networking television experience.” Earlier in the week it was revealed that Skype and Comcast were partnering to bring international family video calls to the that same widescreen TV. Adweek described the Facebook development as "a melding of social networking and TV to a degree the industry is only beginning to experiment with. The potential for advertisers, cable carriers, and programmers is clear." The new version of Xfinity also offers a cloud-based platform. This can be updated instantaneously across all the customer's devices wherever they are .
