A group of hackers, the same to have targeted Sony and Nintendo in recent weeks, have now breached the security of the NHS – raising questions as to the security of patient data.

LulzSec claimed no ill intent behind the attack, publishing a letter to NHS security informing them of the breach, saying: “we mean you no harm and only want to help you fix your tech issues.”

The breach is believed to have occurred after a hacker obtained an “admin” password from the system, giving rise to a “local issue affecting a small number of website administrators,” according to the Department of Health.

Patient data has become an increasingly live issue as the process of digitising patient records continues apace, particularly in light of the loss of millions of email addresses and Passwords of Sony PlayStation Network customers.
