The MOD has spent £2.6 million on television advertising since October, despite having made huge job cuts in the South West.

The news follows last month’s announcement that 2,000 jobs are to go at the MOD’s Filton Abbeywood centre in Bristol.

£1.5 million has been spent on digital advertising and £500,000 on radio and television advertising.

In a statement the MOD said: "The Armed Forces depend on high-quality young people wanting to join the services for rewarding and exciting careers. Despite the reduction in the overall numbers of service personnel, the Armed Forces are still recruiting and training to replace those personnel who leave the services at the end of their contracts."

Jim Murphy, the Shadow Defence Secretary, has said that people will be shocked to hear that while the Government is sacking thousands, it is still able to spend millions on advertising for new recruits.
