Micro blogging service Twitter is to take on Twitpic and Flickr at their own game with the launch of its own custom photo sharing service.

According to technology portal TechCrunch the social media site is likely to use the twimg.com domain for the launch and will attempt to monetise the platform by selling advertisements on the service.

It comes as Twitter seeks to move in on territory currently occupied by third parties in an effort to control more of the full tweeting package.

This manifested itself last week when the firm announced it had purchased Tweetdeck, used by 13% of all Twitter users, for £24m.

An announcement of the plans is expected to be made at the D9 conference in California on Wednesday by Twitter’s chief executive, Dick Costolo.
