The world’s most technologically advanced nation is seeking a beefed up role for Nato in the realm of cyber security by suggesting an expansion of its “Threat to one is a threat to all” treaty into the digital sphere.

Though shying away from explicitly stating such a strategy the Obama government is actively seeking ways to amend existing treaties in light of new technologies.

Its International Strategy for Cyberspace notes: “The world must collectively recognise the challenges posed by malevolent actors' entry into cyberspace, and update and strengthen our national and international policies accordingly.

“Activities undertaken in cyberspace have consequences for our lives in physical space, and we must work towards building the rule of law, to prevent the risks of logging on from outweighing its benefits.”

It comes as US officials grow increasingly concerned at the frequency of attacks originating from as many as 100 foreign intelligence agencies, lone individuals and companies and are keen to tighten its own security.
