The bid book for the Commonwealth Games bid by Hambantota in Sri Lanka was submitted last week, having been designed by Edinburgh and London design outfit, Navyblue.

Sports agency PMP Legacy approached the agency to take design duties for the Hambantota Commonwealth Games bid which led to a bid strategy being developed in December alongside a bid identity, messaging and strapline as well as all supporting materials such as merchandising and the website which were launched at the end of January.

The book is made up of two volumes, 240 pages, which was handed to the Commonwealth Games Federation last week, with a decision against the only other competitor Australia’s Gold Cost for the right to host the event in 2018, expected on 11 November.

Having now completed the book, the agency will start work on a bid film, which will be ready for July.

“What we’re asking all of the Commonwealth Countries to do is to think deeper than just their head and to go to their hearts. ‘Together. From the heart’ is the strapline we’ve used following the country’s impact from the Tsunami a few years ago, as well as civil war. It was a developing country on its knees a few years ago and it’s not waiting around for a hand out, they’re developing their own country and its infrastructure anyway,” said Navyblue design director Bernie-Shaw Binns of the creative concept around the Hambantota bid logo.

Navyblue previously designed the candidature file and supporting communications for the London 2012 bid, the agency is aiming to developing its reputation within sports bidding.

Navyblue was also lead design agency on the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games bid, where it handled the design of the bid identity and supporting communications for the successful campaign. As a result of this, The Sports Consultancy asked the agency to work on the candidature file and supporting campaign and communications for Madrid’s work to host the 2018 Ryder Cup. The decision for this is expected tomorrow (17 May).
