Digital listening figures have increased to 26.5% of all listening hours new Rajar figures have reported.

The figures of Q1 of 2011 show that digital reach has grown in the last year by 2.5 million listeners and that nearly half (47%) of those listen – 22.3 million adults - listen through a digital radio each week.

The South of England apparently has the highest amount of digital listening and reach with one third of all listening through digital, while over half of all listeners listen to digital radio on a weekly basis.

London, Meridian, West and South West regions combined saw digital listening grow to 30% with a digital reach of over half (52%) with the BBC showing ‘sustained growth’ in digital platforms, despite having begun to cut its digital services by a quarter as a result of the licence fee freeze.

Ford Ennals, chief executive of Digital Radio UK, said: “The Q1 2011 RAJARs show continuing evidence of digital radio’s irresistible growth. Digital listening has grown to 26.5% since last year, and 2.5 million more people are listening to digital radio every week. What is most encouraging is how listeners are responding positively to the BBC and Commercial Radio digital-only stations and the new national networks of Capital, Kiss and Smooth, which suggests there is much more growth to come.”
