The Royal Wedding which saw Prince William marry Kate Middleton (now Princess Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) has amassed the largest ever online audience.

The wedding, streamed online by the BBC, who’s coverage was also broadcast through YouTube, is expected to have attracted around 400 million viewers.

The previous record for live streaming were the President Obama’s inauguration in 2009 which attracted 70 million viewers online it is estimated.

However, online viewers watching through the BBC website missed the beginning of the service with the stream crashing on the corporations website due to the numbers tuning into the stream as Middleton began to walk down the aisle.

YouTube was unaffected however.
