NUJ members to be ballotted over BBC redundancies
The National Union of Journalists is to ballot for industrial action over compulsory redundancies taken place at the BBC.
Journalists at the corporation will be balloted for strike action in response to the threat of compulsory redundancies being made as the BBC looks to make budget reductions as a result of the freeze on the licence fee.
The ballot will be sent to members after the BBC refused to consider redeployment or alternative opportunities for around 100 members of staff.
Jeremy Dear, general secretary of the NUJ, commented: "For months we have been negotiating with the BBC and have been able to resolve most cases by agreement. But the BBC’s refusal to consider workable alternatives for around 100 staff has left us with no choice but to ballot members for industrial action to defend jobs and services.
"There is no justification for these compulsory redundancies,” added Dear.
The ballot will begin next week.
