Hollywood blockbusters will be available to rent on YouTube from next month, according to reports eminating from the US.

The video site is reportedly ready to stream big-name movies after having licenses granted by major studios including Sony, Warner Brothers and Universal.

The rental service would see YouTube go head-to-head with rivals such as Apple, Netflix and and Lovefilm, which all provide downloadable films or streams.

YouTube has so far declined to comment on the rumours but an official announcement is expected next month or even sooner.

The new service could provide a welcome fillip for Hollywood studios, which have been faced with the challenge of internet users illegally downloading their films for free.

It is understood that Paramount, Fox and Disney, have yet to commit to YouTube's plan.
