The BBC is considering ‘slimming down’ its new channel as part of its cost cutting measures following the freeze on the license fee.

Director general Mark Thomson is currently considering measures to drive down costs at the new operation at the BBC by 20% and according to The Guardian, that could include BBC News concentrating on new and headline development, while also increasing commercial income through its journalism.

An internal document leaked to MediaGuardian, claims that the 20% savings of £89 million between 2013/14 and 2016/17 through delivering a strategy which would offer ‘a slimmed-down channel focusing on developing news and headlines’ while also breaking news.

The proposals could also see the BBC Parliament channel be made ‘more cost effective’ and sales of BBC News content to foreign broadcasters.

The BBC has moved to say that no decision had been taken at present.
