The social network is expanding its test of real-time ad targeting, which lets advertisers target users based on words in status updates and their Likes.

As reported by New Media Age, bosses believe the ads will let brands create more relevant ads by allowing them to target users as they type, rather than basing ads on Likes and demographic information.

The trial allows advertisers access to user feeds that would mean more relevant and live advert targeting.

A spokeswoman for Facebook said, “Advertising on Facebook can be more useful for users because they’ve explicitly shared their interests. We use this information to show members ads they may be interested in. We’re broadening a test that helps show relevant advertising more quickly to people based on the content they’re sharing, such as status updates or the pages they Like.”

The trial has been in operation since March and will now be expanded to more test agencies, before it is decided whether the real-time model will be rolled out across the whole network.
