A new £1m TV campaign by Jersey’s tourism board claiming that the largest of the Channel Islands is 'the warmest place in the British Isles' has been met with anger from tourism bosses on the Isles of Scilly.

According to the Met Office the Isles of Scilly is officially the warmest place in the country. The Isles of Scilly tourism body also points out that Jersey is not part of the British Isles archipelago, but rather a crown dependency and not part of the UK.

The Isles of Scilly council's economic development officer Julian Pearce told The Guardian newspaper that the council would be writing to Jersey to “remind them of both our geographical position and our ranking as the warmest place in the UK”. He added that he was also considering a formal complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority.

Jersey Tourism’s Jennifer Ellenger remains adamant about claims made in the ad however, saying: "We stand 100 per cent behind our advert and we have the data to prove we are the warmest place.”

She added: “We are politically part of the British Isles, even if not strictly geographically.”

Malcolm Bell of VisitCornwall, which works with Scilly to promote tourism, commented: "Jersey might just about be technically correct in what they say, but it is bordering on unethical to stretch the truth like this when promoting your destination.”
