Should you "friend your boss" on Facebook ? An awful lot of people gave that idea the thumbs down

The survey by recruitment firm Robert Half found 43% of the 414 accounting and finance professionals surveyed were uncomfortable with being connected to the boss on social networking sites.

The feeling was mutual . Many managers were also uncomfortable with being connected to their employees on networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.

As for connecting to colleagues on a similar level, 26% were uncomfortable with that, too.

Thirty-two percent of those surveyed said they believed social networking had negatively impacted on other people's workplace relationships. But just 3% said they thought it had had a direct negative impact on their own workplace relationships. Anyone have a good word? An enthusiastic 13% said it had helped them develop better working relationships.

General manager Megan Alexander of Robert Half New Zealand said social media and social networking makes everything more 'visible'.

"It is important to manage your online profile and be aware of the image you project - because you never know who might be looking," she said.

Alexander's advice : take advantage of privacy settings and keep your profile current.
