CBS News anchor Katie Couric is reported to be departing her role as newsreader to become a talkshow host, apparently after failing to overtake rival bulletins on NBC and ABC.

Couric was employed by the broadcaster five years ago on a rumoured £9m salary, making history as the first sole female anchor of a US news channel.

Despite failing to turn around CBS’s ratings Couric has received expressions of interest from several broadcasters, including NBC, about the possibility of launching a syndicated talkshow.

No date has yet been set for Couric’s departure but she is thought likely to exit on June 4 when her existing contract expires.

Couric has refused to either confirm or deny the rumours.
