Scottish distilleries have collaborated on the production of a whisky for which all proceeds will be donated to the disaster relief effort in Japan.

The seven distilleries have been brought together to create Spirit of Unity, by Euan Michell, managing director of Isle of Arran Distilleries due to the strong connections between Japan and the malt whisky industry as a result of the country’s enthusiasm for whisky.

The name, label and tube design was created by Pocket Rocket, with 2,000 bottles being produced, around 1,200 being sold in the UK.

Some have also being donated for sale in New Zealand to assist with relief in the aftermath of the earthquake at Christchurch.

Michell explained: “Many in our industry, like me, travel regularly to Japan and have made friends and contacts with Japanese whisky enthusiasts.”

He continued: “On seeing the scale and horror of the problems they are facing we were moved to help and other craft distillers immediately came onboard.”

The total expected to be raised will be a minimum of £50,000 through the involvement of Arran, BenRiach, Bladnoch, GlenDronach, Mitchell’s Glengyle, Kilchoman and Springbank.
