BBC Breakfast staff weigh up Salford move, David Cameron's StartUp site is panned by designers and a billionaire businessman blasts social media companies as overpriced. It's Quotes of the Week...

“We always knew there would be those who wouldn't be able to make the move for domestic reasons, but we'll have a really strong line-up of producers and presenters working together in MediaCity."

BBC Breakfast editor Alison Ford says she was not surprised that just over half of the programme's staff, including presenters Sian Williams (pictured) and Chris Hollins, have decided not to move to Salford.

“Most of them will be overpriced. It’s extremely difficult to value social- networking-site companies."

Billionaire businessman Warren Buffett warns fellow investors to steer clear of social networking sites such as Facebook, which was recently valued at more than $50bn.

"Create a Logo'? 20 years of hard-fought positioning disappear.! Totally undermines the whole UK creative industry!"

Cullen Skink's Victor Brierley was one of many figures from the design community to slam the David Cameron-endorsed StartUp Britain website, which encouraged new UK businesses to go to the US for their logo.

"Some of them will come to us for funding in other ways, some of them will find ingenious ways to get money from elsewhere, and some of them will not survive this. And I am very sorry about that."

Arts Council chair Dame Liz Forgan reflects on the cuts made by the organisation, which leave the futures of hundreds of arts groups and creative bodies in doubt.

"We’ve been hogwashed for years about how there’s going to be substantial, meaningful help for the creative industry and it virtually always coming to nothing or the money allocated goes into the wage packets of civil servants, consultants or research companies. I’ve never seen a halfpenny of it and I don’t ever expect to. But what sticks in my throat is the endless twaddle spouted from Westminster about consultation with industry. Consultation my ass."

IAS b2b Marketing boss Rob Morrice explains why he has had enough of organisations like creative support body Vision+Media, for which Morrice served on a steering group before losing patience.

"The private sector shouldn’t rely on public sector funding - ‘By the industry, for the industry’ is the best solution of all. If businesses can overcome every hurdle on their own, great. If they need - and get some support along the way, then great too. I’m not sure it’s either/ or.”

Vision+Media chief executive Paul Taylor responds to the criticism of public sector bodies including his own organisation.

“It's a question of perception of value. If a client asks you to pitch for free they're saying I don't give a shit about you.”

Type guru Bruno Maag leaves the Manchester Design Symposium audience in no doubt about what he thinks of free pitching.

“Everybody thinks they're a designer 'cause they've got a computer in their house. But I wouldn't take my car in a garage and say put the engine on the roof because it looks good there.”

Again at the excellent Symposium, acclaimed illustrator Si Scott says the ubiquity of the computer has made everyone think they understand design.
