After reports emerged last week that Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey was to return to the company in a ‘development role’ it has been announced that he will be executive chairman and head of product development.

The appointment sees Dorsey return after an absence of three years to the company, having previously served as chief executive officer and chairman of Twitter.

He left in 2008 and began mobile payment company Square, which he will remain as CEO for, despite the return to Twitter.

Dorsey is understood to have been tasked with developing the micro logging site’s online advertising offer and drive more user engagement through new products in order to grow the commercial side of the business and take on social media rival Facebook.

Dick Costolo will continue in his role as CEO for Twitter, despite Dorsey’s return.

Earlier today, the Internet Advertising Bureau announced that online advertising spend grew in 2010.
