A controversial mobile application which claimed to offer a “cure” for homosexuality has been banned by Apple.

More than 146,000 people signed a petition against the software, which made outlandish claims to harness the “healing power of Jesus” to give users “freedom from homosexuality”.

Needless to say the authors were an American Christian group known as Exodus International.

Gay rights campaign group Change.org organised the petition, writing to Steve Jobs: “"Apple doesn't allow racist or anti-Semitic apps in its app store, yet it gives the green light to an app targeting vulnerable LGBT youth with the message that their sexual orientation is a 'sin that will make your heart sick' and a 'counterfeit'.

"This is a double standard that has the potential for devastating consequences. Apple needs to be told, loud and clear, that this is unacceptable."

The app, which has been on sale since February 15, was quietly removed without any comment from Apple itself.
