The US government is set to invest a ‘significant’ amount of money into the BBC World Service, as it bids to prevent the future blocking of TV and online services in countries around the world.

The Guardian repots that following recent blocks being put to public access media in countries such as Iran and China, the US Government is expected to agree a deal later this month with the BBC – thought to be worth six figures – in developing technology and software that will prevent future blocks being put in place.

The deal is expected to be announced on 3 May, International Press Freedom Day, although not all of the money will be spent on this one project, with education in state censored countries and the development of an early warning software also on the agenda, as well as internet censorship.

The early warning system will aim to detect online jamming sooner than is currently possible.

Such an investment would be welcomed by the BBC World Service following the recent announcement of a £46 million budget cut over the next three years.
