The government is attempting to put a winter of student discontent surrounding the introduction of tuition fees with the launch of a PR campaign to explain the coalition position.

Ministers claim the campaign is needed to explain why universities are being given the option of charging students up to £9k a year but the move has been labeled “inappropriate” anti-fees protesters.

Voicing his anger at the move one organiser said: "The Government is telling us there is no money and is cutting budgets. But when they need it to sell their own unpopular policy, it is suddenly available."

The Central Office of Information is now searching for agencies to produce the press, radio and online campaign on its behalf.

It is scheduled to launch later this year at an unspecified cost, despite the government having promised to cut back on unnecessary ad campaigns.
