Twitter has said that it could remain headquartered in San Francisco should it be granded tax exemptions by the city.

The microblogging site has been searching for a new home as it continues to expand, with US cities vying for it to relocate, but has now signed a letter of intent to move to a new base within San Francisco, upon approval of a payroll tax exemption.

The letter, written by Ali Rowghani, chief financial officer for Twitter to May Ed Lee, has said that the company ‘remains hopeful’ that the payroll tax exemption will be passed, allowing the company to remain in the city.

According to Lee, the company has the potential to grow beyond 2,600 employees within the next six years, with Twitter currently employing 400 people.
