An alliance of publishers have written to MPs in a bid to make Jeremy Hunt reconsider his decision not to refer the deal to competition commission.

According to the Guardian, the alliance, made up of publishers of the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph and the Guardian have questioned News Corp's aim to protect plurality in news media.

The group, also backed by BT said News Corp's proposals to separate Sky News from BSkyB were "ineffective".

The alliance have written to MPs and peers urging them to lobby culture secretary Jeremy Hunt to reconsider his decision not to refer the deal to the competition commission.

The letter called New Corp drafted safeguards for Sky News' editorial independence as "weak" and that the new channel would still be economically dependent on News Corp.

Hunt's decision not to refer the deal to the competition regulator is subject to a 15-day consultation which runs until 21 March.
