Donald Steel, the BBC’s chief communications adviser, is leaving the broadcaster after 22 years of service.

Steel began his career at the broadcaster as a local radio producer and presenter, moving into PR two years later as a publicist for the Archers.

The veteran PR man went on to spend 11 years as the corporation’s chief media spokesman, handling a veritable soup of crises including a 2001 terrorist attack on Television Centre and later audience deception scandals.

Steel is set to depart his role at the end of this month but will continue to work for the corporation in an advisory role for the next two years.
