Morrison’s, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain, has announced that it is to belatedly launch an online shopping service over the next two years.

This time will be spent conducting a research programme into e-commerce following its investment in US based internet grocer FreshDirect.

The firm is seen as a leader in the delivery of fresh food online and follows the chains purchase of the baby goods site Kiddicare.

Morrison’s also harbours plans to open three trial convenience stores this year.

The diversification plans come on the back of a rise in pre-tax profits to £874m for the 12 months to the end of January
