Streaming music service Spotify has reached the milestone of one million paying subscribers across Europe.

Spotify allows members to listen to millions of songs for free so long as they put up with intermittent adverts. Users can pay £4.99 a month for an ad-free service and £9.99 a month to stream tracks to their mobiles.

Two years ago the Sweden-based company revealed that it had reached one million users, though many were listening for free. Today it announced in a blog post that one million members are now paid up.

Founder Daniel Ek wrote: "It seems like only yesterday we were hatching ideas for a new music service in a tiny office-cum-apartment with a broken coffee machine, and the party we threw having reached one million users almost two years ago today was one to remember.

"So it’s with a sense of real pride and excitement that we can announce a new milestone today, having welcomed our millionth paying subscriber to the service. It’s a testament to our fantastic users who continue to support us and spread the Spotify word, either by telling friends or sharing some of the 200 million playlists that you’ve put together so far."

Ek added that Spotify would be adding "more cool new features" over the coming months.
