A single, BBC backed, online player for more than 200 UK radio stations is to be launched on March 31.

Dubbed UK Radioplayer, the service is described as a one stop shop for all BBC and commercial channels transmitted in Britain and will be made available on YouView initially before being rolled out to mobiles and other platforms.

It is the first time that the public sector broadcaster and its commercial rivals have collaborated on a single radio player which will be available via internet connected TVs.

Already the compiler has been described as an “iPlayer for radio” with fully searchable content allowing users to zero in on specific channels, genres and shows.

It will also facilitate the creation of playlists and be integrated to established social networking sites such as Facebook,
