Pulling a Monday morning sicky might be a common pastime for the British workforce but the trend appears to be catching after the website of the London Stock Exchange was shut down by a virus of its own.

The breach saw adverts infected by malware placed on the site, causing the browsers of some investors to flag up the august institution with the an alarming message “This website has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked.

“Attack sites try to install programs that steal private information, use your computer to attack others, or damage your system."

It is thought that the cash rich nature of London Stock Exchange made it a particularly tempting target for hackers.

Ian Shaw, managing director of MWR InfoSecurity, said: “It is embarrassing that a respected provider of financial information, such as the LSE, has been affected. It affects their credibility."
