Google’s battle against the proliferation against “content farms” is seeing some collateral damage, according to search analysts Sistrix.

The firm has noticed that though some, but by no means all, spammers have been given their just desserts, over 300 genuine resources have also taken a knock - including the British Medical Journal and Technorati.

Searching using common key words for over 60m domains Sistrix found that an unintended consequence of this measure was the downgrade for well known sites

This re-arranging of the internet’s deckchairs began when Google recalibrated its search algorithm to de-rank previously top rated sites which had achieved their elevated status purely on the basis of the quantity (rather than the quality) of their information.
