A former editor of an American newspaper has produced a survey of his former journalists, and found that 67% earn less than they did whilst working at the paper.

John Temple, also a former president and publisher of The Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colorado asked 194 ex workers to respond to a survey of their working situation and happiness, two years after the paper had closed.

57% said that they now earn “Much less” than in their old job, while 63% are still working as journalists. More than 50% of those working in journalism now earn less now than in their old job.

Whilst some ex employees regularly worried about money and meeting bills, Temple found some positive responses for life after redundancy.

Amid the gloom, more journalists said their life was better since leaving the paper than worse. Some pointed at greater opportunities to work on their own businesses, get involved in community projects and work from home.
