Upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose is to accelerate its bid to attract egalitarian shoppers with the launch of a new range of Fairtrade condoms.

The branded Johnnies are designed to give a fair price to South Indian rubber farmers in addition to “increased sensation”.

Anyone wishing to try on the new products, which include ultra-thin and ribbed varieties, should pop along to their local Waitrose store from April 4.

Siobhan Bowie, Waitrose buyer, said: "We have come a long way since the days of people thinking Fairtrade is just about bananas and coffee, so it makes perfect sense to start introducing customers to more innovative and fairly traded products."
