The Institute of Physics has announced that its membership magazine, Physics World, is launching three digital content streams that will allow its members access to the magazine in new ways.

As of March 2011, readers will be able to download an iPad and iPhone app, which has been developed to provide readers with anywhere, anytime access to current and back issues. An Android version is also in development for the near future.

A new online edition is also now available, offering greatly improved functionality that for the first time gives readers a variety of viewing options, including the ability to flick through the magazine, download individual articles and search across all articles and images in any issue going back to January 2010.

The impetus for the change is the launch of IOPimember, the new digital membership grade that has been designed to open up membership beyond the organisation’s traditional UK focus to a broader audience around the world.

“IOPimember is an important new initiative to bring Physics World and IOP to a wider community using exciting new digital platforms as well as improving services to all IOP members,” said John Brindley, director of membership and business.

The announcement is the latest in a series which have seen IOP make its content more readily available by digital means. Earlier this month the Journal of Physics announced that it was to launch video abstracts as integrated content stream and in January the Institue announced that its historic Nuclear Fusion magazine was to open its archives online.
