Channel 4 is looking to cash in on the ratings success of a documentary exploring the wedding practices of the gypsy and traveller community with a series of spin off shows.

With the first bonafide TV hit of the year on its hands the broadcaster is keen to follow through with a host of follow up programming centred on the community.

The show drew 8m viewers at its peak, channel 4’s largest audience since Big Brother nearly four years ago.

In part this has been stoked by a controversy surrounding some of the dating rituals particular to the community, notably the practice of “grabbing” young women.

Amongst the putative titles reportedly being considered are My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas, My Big Fat Gypsy Birthday and even My Big Fat Gypsy Funeral.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “Of course, with 8 million people tuning in we would be stupid if we said 'that was it' and we will not be doing anything more on the subject. It hasn't just been a success, it's been an astonishing success. No documentaries, not even ones on BBC1 or ITV1, get more than 8 million these days."
