The Economist, a weekly current affairs magazine, has posted the highest circulation figures in its 167 year history topping 200,000 in the UK for the 6 months to December 2010.

Figures published by the Audit Bureau of Circulations showed that weekly circulation was up 7.7% on the previous 6 months and 11.1% on the year to hit an average of 210,204.

The Economist's publisher, Yvonne Ossman, said: “We have sought, through our communications, to challenge non-readers' misperceptions of the publication as dry and mostly about finance by highlighting the breadth and individuality of Economist editorial.”

Circulation was also up internationally with the US market providing the bulk of the titles sales where its circulation now exceeds 800,000.

Fellow current affairs title Private Eye also registered an increase in circulation, although the Spectator was marginally down over the period.
