Banksy, the phantom graffiti artist, is taking a break in LA it seems following a spate of mysterious daubed motifs appearing on local billboard posters.

Their arrival coincides with the deliberations of Academy Awards voters who must decide which films nab an Oscar ahead of a February 22 deadline.

Banksy has a vested interest in the outcome as his film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, is up for contention as best documentary.

Amongst the scrawled stencils which have been leaving Americans scratching their heads have been a child soldier firing crayon bullets and a delinquent Charlie Brown puffing on a fag whilst emptying the contents of a petrol can against a burnt out building.

One particularly eye catching specimen defaced a billboard directly opposite the Director’s Guild of America HQ, its removal triggered an altercation between workmen and a passer by who claimed ownership of the valuable artwork.
