Salford City Council's marketing and communications team will be reduced as part of overall savings of £40million, it was revealed today. 15 marketing posts will go overall, while a vacant Director of Marketing and Communications post will remain unfilled.

The council will also lose its mysterious 'Director of Change' title in a bid to save £200,000 from corporate management posts. Former Director of Marketing and Communications Susan Wildman left her post in March 2010 to join the Greater Manchester Public Transport body.

The council will review its entire marketing and communications spend including sponsorship and events support. Earlier today the annual Proms in the Park was scrapped, along with the Christmas themed Salford Ice Rink. Meanwhile, Salford Community Radio's budget will be reduced by 10% and continue on a smaller scale than normal.

Councillor Bill Hinds described the overall cuts as “devastating”. He said: “Savings like these can't be made without affecting people's jobs. This year we're hoping we can make the savings without the need for compulsory redundancies as a lot of people have volunteered to go, but once this budget is set, we'll have to think about how we make further savings next year.”

The final council budget will be revealed on March 2nd. The news follows similar cuts at Manchester Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council.
