Animated Exeter, the South West’s largest animation festival begins today and is expected to attract over 14,000 people.

The festival, now in its 12th year, offers over 140 animation films, as well as the chance to attend industry master-classes, exhibitions, workshops, career-planning and a number of other special events.

The festival’s launch will be celebrated by projecting a piece of large-scale animation called Isca Obscura onto Exeter Cathedral’s north aspect.

The animation, which will run between Wednesday 18th through to Friday the 20th February, was made by London-based visual artists, Tundra and set to music written by Portishead singer, Beth Gibbons.

“Animated Exeter encourages new audiences to experience digital arts and is an important event for the creative economy of Exeter and further afield,” explained Arts Council England’s South West Director, Phil Gibby.

“I think that the historic cathedral building will provide a spectacular backdrop to cutting edge digital art, making an impressive start to an exciting programme of workshops, films and events.”

2011 sees the festival enter its second year as an independent non-profit making company, with £38,000 in funding having been received from the Arts Council.

It will feature exhibitions covering a variety of animation styles, plus an informative careers fair to help those seeking their first jobs in the industry. The Awards Ceremony will showcase the very best emerging talent.

The festival will feature workshops hosted by such notable animators as Joanna Quinn, Alan Gilbey and stop-motion animator, Mary Murphy.
