ABCs: Independent's i clocks 133,472 sales
The Independent's spin-off newspaper i has recorded average sales of 133,472 in its first Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) figures.
The 20p paper has been buoyed by a major marketing investment by its owner Alexander Lebedev, including a TV ad featuring comedian Dom Joly and campaigner Jemima Goldsmith (formerly Khan).
Parent title the Independent had a headline circulation of 185,035, taking the combined circulation for the two titles to 318,507.
That would put the two Independent titles in more hands than rival The Guardian, which recorded a headline circulation of 279,308.
Andrew Mullins, managing director of the Independent and i, said: "The fact that we have been able to grow the print category without cannibalising The Independent clearly demonstrates that there is a significant untapped market for time-poor consumers who want to read a concise, quality newspaper - and huge opportunities for advertisers to engage with them.”
Elsewhere the Times suffered a year-on-year sales decline of 10% to 457,250, but there was better news for fellow News International title The Sun, which bounced back above the 3m mark.
All papers recorded a month-on-month sales rise except the Financial Times. The improvement has been credited to the bad weather disrupting sales in December along with a typical seasonal dip.
