Sales of iPad, iPhone and other mobile apps are expected to exceed $15b in 2011, according to a report by research firm Gartner.

Downloads of games like Angry Birds and Doodle Jump are forecast to lead to a near tripling of global app sales, concluded the report.

“Something massive has happened,” said research director Stephanie Baghdassarian, “It’s called the iPad and all its little brothers and sister and cousins who are copying Apple.”

She said Apps is by far the fastest growing part of the telecoms sector and could eventually overtake in the money that is generated making called in terms of revenue.

Apple, which set up its app store in two years ago still dominates the market, accounting for nine out of 10 of all the apps sold. Last week it announced that more than 10 billion apps have been downloaded from its store.

Most apps less than £1.00. However, some can cost up to £1,000. In 2008 an application called ‘I am Rich’, which simply showed a large ruby glowing on an iPhone screen sold for $999.99.
