Google to hire 1,000 new staff in Europe
Outgoing Google chief executive Eric Schmidt has announced plans to hire more than 1,000 staff over the coming year to boost its European operation. The expansion follows the firms strong end of year profits of $2.54bn.
Schmidt announced the plans yesterday at the DLD conference in Germany and said the new recruits would be roughly split between technology and sales staff. The new staff will add to Google's existing 5,000 staff pool across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The investment in Europe follows a similar expansion by Facebook, who announced 100 new roles at its European headquarters in Dublin before Christmas. The new jobs contrast with severe cuts at Yahoo and MySpace over recent weeks.
