President Obama has sought to reposition America from one nation under god to one nation under Google and Facebook in his annual State of the Union Address.

With the words: "We are the nation of Google and Facebook" Obama, who more than most politicians has been quick to harness the power of social media, made it clear he now believes the land of the frees tech titans can play a similar role in maintaining the superpower’s global stature.

The speech comes as jobs take centre stage in American politics with Google announcing plans to hire some 6,000 workers this year standing in stark contrast with ongoing fears of growing competition from China.

Articulating these fears Obama memorably describing the current global shifts as “our generation’s Sputnik moment”, appropriately enough this became a top trending topic on Twitter.

Obama is calling on American industry to galvanise behind further innovation having clearly taken a leaf out of the book of one of his predecessors, Bill Clinton, who coined the term: “it’s the economy stupid”.
