The National Federation of Retail Newsagents, has lent its wholehearted backing to a trio of Scottish publishers; Scottish and Universal Newspapers, DC Thomson and Scottish Provincial Press, in their decision to up prices.

Cover prices will be increased for all the publishers’ titles whilst maintaining retailers margins at 25%. This would help to fund a 2011 promotions campaign, reader competitions and added value offers.

Amongst the titles affected is DC Thomson’s Sunday Post, its cover price will be increased by 10p to £1.10.

Abdul Qadar, Scottish president of the newsagents, body said: “The NFRN applauds all these publishers for their actions. We are encouraged that in difficult trading conditions, they continue to recognise the needs of independent retailers and support us in this way.

“With some of the cover prices on the newspapers over or near to the £1 mark, it can only be in the interest of newsagents to stock these titles and push for extra sales.”

The move follows a series of recent price rises made in the industry, notably at The Scotsman, Daily Record and Scottish Daily Express.
