The Independent could be about to double the amount it charges for advertising by bundling space in its 20p paper i.

The Guardian reports that since spin-off daily i launched in October, ads booked into the Independent have also appeared in i free of charge.

But executives at the Independent are now believed to be trying to get media buyers onside about increasing the ad rates by promising them a combined circulation of 340,000 for the main paper and i.

The Independent is understood to be playing its hand with media buyers now because it expects a circulation boost for i on the back of its new multi-million pound TV advertising campaign.

But i is not yet listed by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, so the paper will have to work hard to convince media buyers of its worth to advertisers.
