One of Britain’s oldest newspapers the Press and Journal has appointed a new editor, with Damian Bates, editor of sister title Aberdeen’s Evening Express, due to take up the role when Derek Tucker retires in March.

Tucker, who has steered the Press and Journal for over 18 years, announced his departure in November.

Bates, at the Evening Express since August 2003, was promoted from deputy editor to editor in 2006.

Aberdeen Journals managing director Alan Scott said of the new appointment: "I am pleased to announce the appointment of Damian Bates as Editor of The Press and Journal effective from 1 March.

"I am sure you will all join with me in wishing Damian every success in his new role and, as far as his replacement is concerned, I would hope to make an announcement in the very near future as to who that will be."
