Keep Britain Tidy, a campaign group set up to target litter louts, has turned its attentions from Britain’s real streets to its most famous fake one in a bid to discourage viewers from adopting actors' bad habits.

The organisation is urging the cast of Coronation Street to be fined or reprimanded from littering on set after Peter Barlow, a character on the soap, carelessly flicked a cigarette butt onto the famous Mancunian cobbles.

Keen to make such behaviour socially unacceptable the pressure group is urging the shows writers to pen a storyline which sees the litter fiend ticked off for his careless ways.

Jill Partington from Keep Britain Tidy said: "Soaps keen to reflect reality should also consider that, in reality, Peter could probably be either fined or reprimanded for regularly chucking his fag butts on the floor."

ITVs flagship regularly draws 11.5m viewers, making it one of the most influential programmes on British TV.
