Aardman Animations, makers of the Wallace and Gromit series, has announced that it will create a series of downloadable one-minute Shaun the Sheep animations exclusively for the up-coming Nintendo 3DS hand-held games console.

Aardman co-founder and executive chairman, David Sproxton, made the announcement at the 3DS European press launch in Amsterdam yesterday.

“To be contributing to something as innovative as the 3DS from the very outset is an extraordinary experience for us and we’re looking forward to seeing Shaun the Sheep on 3DS and working with Nintendo,” said Sproxton.

The Nintendo 3DS, which launches on the 25th March 2011, will be the world’s first portable 3D entertainment device and is set to revolutionise the 3D experience by removing the need to wear special glasses.

The partnership with Aardman aims to highlight the 3DS’s 3D capabilities and show that it is more than just a gaming device and follows similar agreements with Sky TV and Eurosport who have agreed to provide short-form 3D content for the console.

Shaun the Sheep is no stranger to the gaming market. Having been launched in the UK in 2007 the character has enjoyed a successful transition into the digital world with a number of popular online games, including the BAFTA-nominated Home Sheep Home which has had more than 74 million plays to date.
