US firm RockYou has acquired Manchester-based Playdemic, a developer of social networking games, for an undisclosed sum.

Playdemic is understood to have 16 staff and is best known for Gourmet Ranch, a cooking/farming game for Facebook played by more than 500,000 monthly users.

Social gaming firm RockYou said Playdemic would operate as an independent arm of the company.

Jonathan Knight, RockYou's senior vice-president of games, said: "At RockYou we place great value on the art of game-making and we’re elated to welcome the Playdemic team into our studio system.

“Playdemic will retain their culture and creative control, as they bring their significant game industry experience to making social games of today and tomorrow.”
