Heidi, an overweight and cross-eyed opossum, has become Germany’s latest celebrity after accruing 50,000 Facebook followers, a hit Youtube video and even a song.

Enterprising fans have been quick to cash in on the Leipzig Zoo residents improbable fame, flogging a host of Heidi themed mugs, T-shirts and a replica stuffed doll retailing for £80. Even a mooted (ghost written) autobiography is planned to satiate demand.

Heidi’s primary claim to fame, apart from her squint eyes, is an uncanny ability to fake death. Upon sensing danger the creatures will lie down, bare their teeth and dribble a froth of saliva from their mouths in an attempt to dissuade predators from feasting.

Heidi’s new found wealth wont enhance the mammals diet however, the creature has been put on a strict diet after she became so fat she could no longer use her tail as a climbing aide.
